The Local Democracy Embassy was established in May 1997 as part of the European Council and Congress Programme for local and regional government in Europe. Its main purpose is focused on the development of local democracy through dialogue and tolerance. The Embassy supports the municipal authorities in the protection of the multicultural and multi-etnical cohabitation. It promotes dialogue, tolerance, and human rights. The embassy supports press and electronic media in the process of development and dissemination of diversified (pluralistic) ideas; it also promotes and assists the protection of natural and cultural resources and stimulates social and economic development.
The Local Democracy Embassy has been building up basis for establishing partnerships between the cities of Ohrid, Karditza (Greece), Den Haag (Netherlands), Nürnberg (Germany), Pendle (Great Britain), Piran (Slovenia), Stuttgart (Germany), and Versoix (Switzerland).
