The
church "The Ascendance of the Holy Mother" - Velestovo
The church "The
Ascendance of the Holy Mother" is located on the slopes of Mount Galicica, about 5 km
from Ohrid. This is a small church, one-naval in shape with semi-circled vault and an
external three-sided apse. Stone, cut and crushed, was the material used for the
construction.
The frescoes in the church were painted in two phases. The first,
according to the inscriptions (in Old Slavonic language), they were painted in 1444, while
the second in 1451. The two phases are distinguishable. The artist of the first phase
seems to be quite mature, unlike the author of the frescoes from the second phase. The
frescoes completely follow the trend that prevailed during the presence of the Ottoman
Turks in Macedonia.
One inscription from 1451 mentions the Ohrid Archbishop Nicholas.
Actually, the frescoes were painted during his time. It is interesting to note that there
are no other sources that mention Archbishop Nicholas as the head of the Ohrid
Archiepiscopate.
