The
church of Old St. Clement
A Greek inscription inside the church above the
southern entrance indicates 1378 as the date of its construction and fresco painting. It
was endowed by priest Stefan.
The church is small in dimensions, it is a one-naval in shape with
three-sided apse. Originally, it had semi-circled vault, and in recent times it was
covered with a flat ceiling.
It is the only church dedicated to the miracle maker of Ohrid, St.
Clement of Ohrid. After Clement's monastery (St. Pantheleimon) was converted into a
mosque, the remains of St. Clement were first moved to this church, and later on to the
church St. Bogorodica Perivlepta.
The fresco paintings of the lower sections of the eastern and southern
walls in the apse are preserved in the church. K. Balabanov estimates that the frescoes of
this modest church are related to the traditional painting style and do not bring in any
new elements that would be unknown to the contemporary painting style in Ohrid.
The frescoes contain scenes of the Great Holidays. There is also a
portrait of St. Naum that is fairly similar to the one found on the icon of church St.
Nicholas Bolnicki.
