The
church of St. Constantine and Helena
In the old
part of the town, in the immediate vicinity of the church St. Bogorodica Perivlepta (St.
Clement) in quite a dominating location a church was dedicated to Czar Constantine and
Czarina Helena. This church was built and fresco painted in 1477. According to an
inscription in the church, it was built by the hieromonk Parthenius. A portrait of the
builder holding a model of the church in his hands is stationed above the inscription. The
model is a perfect replica of the church. Also, there are portraits of his mother and his
son, as well as his deceased father.
In respect of architecture, this church is a one-naval
with a semi-circled vault ending with a dome. The eastern side ends with a three-sided
altar apse. In a later stage a small chapel and porch were adjoined to the church. Similar
are the structures of the churches St. Bogorodica Bolnicka and St. Gorgi in the village
Godivje, Ohrid region.
The interior of the church contains numerous compositions. Most
distinctive is the scene of "Annunciation" in the second section of the altar
apse. The scene is divided into two parts: the portrait of the Archangel Gabriel is on the
left, and the portrait of the Virgin Mary is on the right. The best preserved composition
is "The Transfiguration of Christ". It covers a large area, even a section of
the vault. The scene is depicting Christ with two angels
The portraits of Czar
Constantine and Czarina Helena are in the southern part of the church. The scenes
"The Descend of the Holy Spirit" and "The Ascend of the Virgin". are
in the second zone. In the eastwest direction are the scenes "The Last Supper",
"Washing the Feet of the Apostles","Prayer in the Olive Hill",
"Jude's Betrayal", "Peter's Denial" and "Christ Before
Pilate". The following compositions are on the northern wall: "The Nativity of
Christ", "The Way to Golgotha", "On the Crucifix" i "The
Mourning and burial of Jesus". Important works in the third zone are "The Ascend
of Christ" (on the northern wall), "The Visitation of the Virgin" (the
southern wall), and "Transfiguration of Christ" (the western wall).
The porch itself contains a distinctive composition, partially
preserved, of the scene "The Depart of the Holy Warriors in Battle for the Victory of
Christianity". The composition "The Annunciation" is on the royal port.
Presumably, it was constructed at the same time as the church itself. There are a number
of icons in the iconostasis that were painted in XIV, XVII, and XVIII century.
Much later a chapel dedicated to St. Spyridhon was built. All sections
of the chapel are covered with frescoes. It also contains an iconostasis. The frescoes
were painted in three zones. They are not of high quality; however it helps in the process
of reconstructing the development process of the fresco painting in the later period.
