ERMERGENCE OF SOCIALISTIC IDEAS
During the First World War, and after the end of the War, the construction of the biggest economic utility, the railway Kicevo-Struga-Ohrid commenced. The railway was mainly built in a way that the labour of the construction was free of charge. The free of charge labour has been present for a long time in this region, and as a result a large number of roads, bridges etc. have been built.
The complex living condition mobilized the population as well as the political parties. The political parties of the citizens as well as the Communist Party intensified their action towards attracting support of the population especially during the local and general elections in 1920. The socialistic ideas have been present in Ohrid since 1908. The club "Awareness" worked in the community Varos, but also another similar one existed in the community Kosista. The dissemination of the socialistic ideas in Ohrid started with the people who worked abroad such as: Klime Kosarce, Todor Ninkovski, Kosta Kordovski, Petar Bace and others.
The founding meeting of the Communist Party in Ohrid took place towards the end of December 1919 in the presence of three delegates from the Skopje branch of the organization. The Executive Board of the organization was elected and Milutin N. Anastasievic was elected President, while Panto Rilkovski was elected secretary. According to the magazine of the Communist Party, "Socialistic Dawn" in the course of 1920, a large number of citizens adopted the Party Programme. That same year, in mid August, the local elections took place, and in most towns in Macedonia the so-called "red communes" were established, i.e. towns in which the Communist Party won. However, the local elections did not take place in Ohrid because the whole district was treated as a risky zone due to the fact that gangs of robbers used to show up and disturb the population. The local elections took place 26th September 1920. The political parties began their preparations for the general elections a month after that. In the meantime, having faced difficulties from the organized Communist Party, the regime of former Yugoslavia devised a posse after the party members accusing them for "pro-bulgarian orientation". Right before the actual elections in the district of Ohrid, four candidate lists were put up, those being the lists of the: Radical Party, Democratic I and Democratic II Parties, and the Communist Party. In that time there were a few municipalities in the Ohrid District. The following were municipalities of the Ohrid District: Velgosti, Openica, Kosel, Meseista, Belcista, Velmej, Zbazdi, Drimkol, Labunista, Velesta, Draslajca, Visni, Vevcani, Radozda, and Delogozda. The general elections for the Constitutional Assembly of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenians took place 28th November 1920. Serafim Krstic and D-r Ilija Sumenkoski from the Democratic Party and Milutin Atanasievski - Snegar from the Communist Party were elected members of Parliament from the Ohrid District. Under the great pressures of the Government, the Communist Party in Ohrid ceased to exist in the middle of 1921.
Few years prior to the Second World War the Municipality of Ohrid commenced to prepare the urban physical plans of the town and its immediate resorts in order to preserve the cultural and historical monuments as well as to facilitate the development of tourism. Amongst the more significant capital developments of the time were the hydro power plant in the village Ramne. The engineer from Ohrid, MIhajlo Manev, drafted the blueprint of the building. The construction cost of the building was 2,300,000 dinars. The funds were provided by a government loan. Officially, the citizens of Ohrid obtained electricity in their homes on 7th July 1939. Prior to that, a small coal power plant and oil power plant in the ownership of Yordan Petkovski existed, however they could not meet the needs of the people of Ohrid.
A Student Community, established under the initiation of the Regional Board of the Macedonian Students at the University of Belgrade (FR Yugoslavia) was quite active in the years prior to the War. The most prominent activists were Kuzman Josifovski - Pitu, Mirce Acev, and Straso Pindur who were also great revolutionists in the Second World War. In the period between 1938 and 1940, everything that happened was under the leadership of the Student Community.
In the summer of 1940 the organization of the Communist Party was reestablished in Ohrid. Upon the request of Mirce Acev, in the house of Simon Ivanoski-Pelivan a meeting took place. Pere Rupe, Dimce Kanevce, Jakim Maslo, Stefan Kanevce and Kole Safran attended the meeting. Pere Rupe was elected Secretary of the party. |
